Well, not actually celebrities on holiday, as such, but the South African Times reports today on the opening of Soweto's first luxury hotel so presumably this is where a celebrity would stay, were they to stay in Soweto.
According to the report:
Hundreds of ordinary people and dignitaries have flocked to the opening of Soweto’s first luxury hotel to witness history in the making.Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, Holiday Inn Soweto’s spokeswoman said yesterday: “The last few evenings we’ve hosted celebrities, businesspeople and politicians including Nelson Mandela’s family members, Prince Buthelezi and Deputy President Phumzile Mlamno-Ngcuka, who cut the ribbon and officially opened us.”
Although the four-star establishment opened yesterday, bookings will only be taken from Tuesday.
Michelle Marais, the financial manager of Holiday Inn, said: “We believe our busiest time will be towards the end of November and the first weeks in December .
Situated in Freedom Square in Kliptown the hotel is aimed at boosting tourism in Soweto.
Built at a cost of R23.4-million the hotel will cater for families as well as the individual traveller. In addition to its 48 rooms, which include two suites, there are two executive boardrooms, a restaurant and cocktail bar.
The decor in the hotel is a mix of Kliptown history and township-style, including Alf Khumalo photographs and vintage radiograms.
According to South Africa Info the hotel overlooks the informal market in Union Street and Jada's place, the house in which Nelson Mandela was hiding when the Freedom Charter was drawn up on 26 June 1955.
