An Epic disaster?

Oh dear. Hasn't anyone got anything nice to say about Norwegian Cruise Lines' new ship, Norwegian Epic? I think it's safe to say it has made an impact -- but for all the wrong reasons, if comments on the Cruise.co.uk and Cruise Critic websites are anything to go by.

Maybe things will improve once it has the trademark NCL graffiti down the sides?

Barbara Driscoll:

Your comments about Plymouth, having been brought up 'over the bridge', are very surprising.

If you did want to cruise into a port to take part in a shopping trip then I would have to agree that Plymouth would not be the place, but, as a reporter you should be a little more subjective.

Plymouth has one of the most beautiful entries to any port in the world. If you arrive in good weather it would not soon be forgotten but the weather is a problem wherever in the UK you happen to be visiting.

Plymouth Hoe with its surrounding buildings and the Citadel dating back to the time of the civil war is more than impressive and that you can visit without having to pay for an excursion as it is just a short walk from the terminal. From there you can walk down to the Barbican with its Elizabethan houses and cobbled streets.

If you want to spend on an excursion then you can visit, within a very short distance, Saltram house which has been used in the filming of many period dramas.

A little further afield and you can have a really memorable drive up across Dartmoor, famous for the Hounds of the Baskervilles, and visit Buckland Abbey the home of Sir Francis Drake.

There are so many more availble options, much to numerous to mention but I really do not think that any one place should be 'put down' because of perhaps not very happy childhood memories of one reporter.

Jane Archer:

Thank you for being in touch Barbara. Interesting you mention the Barbican. I was impressed by how well that has been done up in the past few years. It struck me that it really has made the place come alive, especially in the evenings. And you are absolutely right about the sail in to Plymouth. I've done it with Brittany Ferries and the views are stunning.

Actually quite a few of the readers on Cruisemates are very much looking forward to Epic. They see it as the new "a little bit of everything" new age ship without the massive crowds of Oasis.

While I am personally very excited about Oasis of the Seas, when I mention many of readers turn the conversation over to Epic.

Don't be surprised if this ship is the "sleeper" of the next generation of newbuilds. (meaning it is the hit that doesn't always get the spotlight)
