There has been widespread media speculation that Thomas Cook will slip from the FTSE 100. We'll know late on Wednesday afternoon when the FTSE announces the result of its latest quarterly review. The group's relegation would be in keeping with how the FTSE is run and yet, at one level, would be extraordinary.
A listing is determined by market capitalisation - the total value of a company's shares. A FTSE-listed company that sits outside the 100 but has a value above that of the company in 90th place is entitled to join the list of 100 biggest companies provided it meets other requirements.
Two companies were in that position at the start of this week, making Thomas Cook a candidate to drop down a division to the FTSE 250 index because of its smaller market capitalisation. Things had shifted by close of trading on Tuesday, with just one company in an automatic promotion place and Thomas Cook third from the foot of the FTSE 100 table. However, companies also suffer automatic relegation if they fall below 110th position overall in the Index and Thomas Cook was at number 117.
Why would Cook's exit from the premier league be extraordinary? A succession of market analysts recently recommended investors buy into the group, suggesting its shares are undervalued. Charles Stanley Securities issued a report on May 27 saying precisely that, and Nomura made a similar recommendation.
Nothing has changed at the company. Its most recent trading update was well received, and the ash crisis that triggered a fall in share values across the sector should not return with the intensity of April and May now restrictions on flying have been eased.
So Cook is sitting fairly pretty in the circumstances. Yet its share price will almost certainly fall if it is relegated because shares in FTSE 100 companies attract more attention from investors - much in the way people follow the fortunes of Manchester United or Chelsea more than Stockport County or QPR. In particular, institutional investors such as pension funds tend to track the FTSE 100.
An academic study of the impact of FTSE 100 membership (Bryan Mase: 'The Impact of Changes in the FTSE 100 Index') concluded that "institutional ownership increases after a stock is listed" while "the trading volume [of deleted firms] is reduced".
Of course, even the impact of a fall in share price could be contradictory - the personal fortunes of shareholders such as chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa would fall, but sharp investors might decide the shares are even better value and buy in, pushing the price back up.
The issue will not make or break Thomas Cook, or even blight its summer in the way volcanic ash threatened to, but the group could really do without the fall in status. There is prestige attached to being a FTSE 100 company.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
