Security at luxury hotels questioned after Mumbai attacks

taj.jpgAs you would expect, hotels are beefing up security after the attacks on the Oberoi and Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai.

Most of us think of luxury hotels, especially familiar brands such as Marriott or Hilton, as safe havens in an often unfamiliar environment.

But as security experts have pointed out this week, hotels are soft targets for terrorists with lots of different entrances and exits, people milling about and unattended bags lying around.

The chairman of Oberoi hotels said nothing more could have been done to prevent the attacks. I know no plans are foolproof, but I'd like to know my hotel is background checking its staff and working with police to have emergency procudures in place.

And as travellers, we should all be alert to what's going on around us, even if we're having a drink in the bar or heading off for a spa treatment.

Here are some tips from MSNBC on how to stay safe:

· Before you even go inside, look for cars parked near the front entrance. If you spot an unattended vehicle parked near the front entrance, report it to a staffer.
· The same thing goes for unattended luggage in the lobby. Say something.
· If you spot entrances to the building that are not patrolled by security personnel, report those, too.
The bottom line is to be a proactive, aware traveler, and you increase the odds of your security and safety every time you stay at a hotel, wherever it is located.

Dear Chloe,

As a Parsi Zoroastrian I have travelled to Bombay over 11 times
from the UK to visit our Fire Temples. I have always dined at the Taj Mahal palace hotel which I believe still belongs to TATA (a Parsi as well) and the security is good around that part of the City. Nearby at the cinema "Enox" and other Malls around the city security staff are always checking the cars for any bombs and checking us as everyone enters the parking area, which I was impressed with when I visted last year in November 2007.

best wishes

Adil
