The British company Japan Leisure Hotels (JLH) is going on a huge buying spree in Japan, investing £50 million on those idiosyncratic dens of iniquity "love hotels".
And yes, they are what you think they are. And as you can imagine they turn one hell of a profit.
These amorous havens for beleaguered Japanese couples in overpopulated cities across the land (living with parents, suffering the paper thin walls), are a big industry in Japan, accounting for about 30,000 hotels and more than a million visits per day.
(Not to mention the hordes of zealous tourists, tripping over their beige Merrells in order to gawp at the gaudy interiors, looking for god-only-knows tell tale signs).
And although it sounds very un-British, JLH said that it was planning to more than quadruple its present room total, which currently stands at six hotels.
But will it work even in a recession?
Let's leave the final word with director of JLH, Steve Mansfield: "Life gets miserable in a recession and you are going to find people deciding that the way they want to spend their Y6,000 [£40] is to take themselves to a leisure hotel and just enjoy the fantasy for a couple of hours."

Butting in here, I don't think people realise, the situation over in Japan is going to get a lot worse before it starts improving - dangerous nuclear power scenario, 20% permanent loss of electricity generation too as those stations most likely won't be coming back online ever again... Japan's going to be feeling all these things and for a long time too.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
